“So what's wrong with THAC0 anyways?”
I have a better question; in the 11
years you’ve been there, have you started a thread that wasn’t stupid fucking bullshit? No. The answer is no.
The math is no more
difficult than the 3.x model IMHO
Your IMHO is wrong. As pointed out, we tend to do better with addition than with
subtraction, especially if negative numbers are involved. Now go troll
somewhere else.
“Your favorite Saving Throw model?”
3E. And again, this is a stupid
thread with you demanding people explain shit to you that you don’t actually
need or want explained.
“Monks that aren't "traditional"
or basically used a
monk that has mystical powers, not one based on a guy who learned his stuff in
a dojo?
Uh, you do realize that D&D
monks have mystical powers, right?
“Ability Scores vs Ability Modifiers”
For as long as I can
remember, D&D as had ability scores from which information was extracted.
In older editions, this information took the form of various adjustments. So a
score of 16 could mean a +2 adjustment for one ability, a +1 adjustment in
another and a 10% chance to bend bars.
Then 3rd edition
came and in an effort to unify mechanics and streamline things, a unique
numerical modifier was tied to each score. Now, every 16 gave a modifier of +3.
I personally loved this and still love it and I am glad whenever this method is
used but that does raise the question of the relevance of the ability score.
So what I want to
ask you fine folks is, what have you seen in various d20/OGL/D&D-inspired
games and/or what have you come up with to make use of those ability scores ?
Because I really want to put those to use if they are on the sheet.
One of the most
obvious options would be to simply ignore them or in the case of certain games,
simply remove them completely from the game. It's not personally something I
wish to see so I am looking for other solutions and options. The second most
obvious I suppose will be to use of ability scores as some sort of roll-under
stat check. Again, this isn't something I personally favor.
Really? You really want to know
what to do with ability scores since they’re there on the sheet? You look at
them, and then you use them to compare to the ability scores of other creatures
and characters. You figure out bonus spells, weight capacity, etc with them.
The only things that really need to
be done with them are already done.
Zak S. has suggested
using the ability score as a modifier for a d10 roll in a kind of stunt or
cool-moves system
Zak is a shitbag who couldn’t
design his way out of a bottomless wet paper bag.
Can't offer many
helpful advice here. For me they are just an old relict that serves no greater
purpose and adds some needles complexity to the game.
They don’t add any needles or even
needless complexity to the game.
“Who are the big bads of each realm?”
The GM. Or if things have gone
wonky, the PCs.
“So I Used the Deck of Many Things”
The Gibster posted some boring,
whiny shit here that isn’t important.
Whose idea was it to
make this deck in the first place?
Presumably Gygax or one of his
players. Normally, OG would answer, but he just picked up a 6 month ban in
place of the fifth or sixth perma he should have earned by now.
Want to make things
easy on yourself? The response from the seer could be "draw a card",
the card gives the PC involved a wish can be used to bring back the lost PCs.
That’s fucking stupid, and only a shitty
GM would do that.
“Any miniature suggestions?”
Bridget the Midget has her charms.
“Questions about historical armor”
I don’t have any answers, just
props for starting such a massive douchebag fight.
“[5e] New ability scores”
The DMG has two new
ability scores, sanity and honor. What do you think should be added as optional
scores?
I always thought in games with a
fair amount of combat that the Fighting ability score from FASERIP should be
adapted.
How about a LUCK
stat that is always rolled, even if the other stats are point buy.
I’m down with that.
Luck doesn't have a
mechanical effect on the game, but if you roll high you know your character is
lucky and can play accordingly: "Hey, I've got a 17 Luck. There's no way
that black dragon's acid breath can one-shot me!"
That, however, would be a stupid
fucking use of it. Luck should absolutely have a mechanical effect, that being
what you check when you’re out of thieves tools and want to see if you happen
to have an extra set down in the bottom of your pack or whatnot.
“[5e] How to handle death”
I think the system
for handling character death is just plain bad. I'm tempted to houserule by
going to first edition. If the characters HP reaches 0, the character is slain.
HOw did you go around this.
Can’t give a good answer to this
one without knowing what your problems with the existing rules are.
“Old school saving throws: make sense of them”
Your challenge: make
sense of AD&D saving throws
No. Go fuck yourself and do a
search. This subject has been dealt with. And in the time frame that you’ve
been here asking stupid questions.
And look at that, someone even
found a thread on the same subject that you fucking started a year ago, you
dipshit.
“3.5 A silly question about Dragon PCs”
I notice that
Dexterity is the one trait that Dragons never improve in as they age. Any
reason why that stat should be left alone when leveling a PC?
Nope. If the player wants to up
their dragon’s Dex, they should go right ahead and do it. I just figure other
dragons don’t increase it, viewing it as a waste of their points, since they’ll
never get it to a level where it’s more useful than pumping up the scores that
are already pretty good.
“Ok, so another 5E thing I've noticed; Magic Items are hard to
award”
Sounds like they screwed the pooch
on this one.
“OSR D&D as a post-apocalyptic setting”
1. Bands of
marauders are important and need to happen.
No shit. This should be happening
every once in a while even if it’s not a post-apoc setting.
5. Bling: One of the
things that D&D has historically not paid enough attention to is playing
dress-up. I don't mean that the players should show up in costume. I mean that
the PCs should be spending much more time on fantastical Vancian couture,
terrifying battle-masks or makeup inspired by various parts of real-world
history, necklaces made of their enemy's teeth, and actually wearing the
jewelry they've pulled out of various tombs in order to advertise that they are
successful stone-cold badasses. I've instituted a rule in a lot of my campaigns
that if you openly wear articles of jewelry, they don't count towards your
encumbrance.
Also, you can use it
to modify reaction rolls (people can immediately tell that a sorceress with a
5,000gp crown of onyx and platinum is a VIP, and they'd probably better not
fuck with her, or anyone else who can accumulate and keep that kind of wealth)
and morale rolls (enemies might fight harder for a chance to loot the PCs'
goods.) So! Add rules for this. I suggest moving reaction rolls and morale
rolls to 3d6 instead of 2d6, so you can make the range bands a bit wider and
have room for a 1 or 2 point modifier without breaking the tables.
This is incredibly stupid. Which is
uncommon for the poster, so I guess they were due. Swinging a lot of bling,
especially in a post-apocalyptic setting does not say “stone cold badass”, it
says “VICTIM RIGHT HERE ROB ME!”
“Bad GMing?”
How do you feel
about using cut scenes in your game?
They work in some games, they don’t
work in others. Seriously. For example, I have and would use cutscenes in my
Buffy/Angel game. I would not use them in my dungeon crawl D&D game.
“Beast: the Primordial teaser thread/ [Beast] So
BtP is contentious. Is there (and should there be) a fix?”
I have never heard of this game, I
don’t have any interest in this game, but holy fucking shit did this topic
bring out the inner douchebag in just about everyone
involved.
“[Supers] Need help with a name for a super villain prison.”
So a prison for
villains will soon play a prominent role in my supers campaign but the problem
is I don't have a name for it yet and am drawing a blank. The only thing I have
come up with so far is Panopticon, which I would like to save for a secret
government facility. I would rather not use the name of an existing prison in
other comic continuity, so I look to the think tank of rpg.net
Well, let’s see: if it’s a Federal
prison, I would go with something like ADX (Name of a City or feature that is
not nearby, to mislead people).
If it’s a state prison, I’d go with
(Rich or Important Person’s name) Correctional Facility.
I wouldn’t give it a fanciful name.
Let the players figure that out.
“Least breakable rpg system?”
TWERPS.
“Would you play an RPG that had these rules?”
No. Because:
1. They are painfully stupid rules.
2. I wouldn’t play a game that you
were running.
“Is Mage: The Awakening "too political?"
I think the better question is “Are
you a moron, Mr. just joined this month to start shit?’
In defence of TV
Tropes
Don’t. That fucking place sucks and
doesn’t need anyone defending it.
“Palladium System Re-write”
What d'yall think?
It sucks.
Does it seem to you
a good simplification/modernization of the system?
No, because it’s not.
I focused heavily on
streamlining it, making it simpler, smoother, and more linear
And you failed at every one of
those goals.
“Riddles/Puzzles - Figured out by the Player or by the
Character?”
Puzzles in games suck donkey balls.
If I want to dick around with puzzles, I
have the fucking internet. So replace it with a nice basic combat.
“Texas Flood Relief Bundle is live on RPGNOW”
The bundle contains
over $150 in pdfs but is priced at just $20.
Sadly, it’s $150 in crap. Also,
Texas isn’t the only place that suffered severe flooding recently. Plus
tornados and shit. Seriously, while it’s
a nice gesture, it’s not a good bundle.
“Looking for Input on Universal RPGs”
Hi, Mr. Just Joined To Badmouth
Games Asswipe!
I hope however the
method in which I approach the design will differentiate it from the others.
I’m comfortable guessing there is a
99% chance it will not differentiate it.
Instead of boring you with further details of my vision I will
skip to the first question which will help me in my research.
You’re 76 words too late on that
front, Chief.
Please see below as
to systems I am already familiar with and what I find distasteful about them.
No one cares what you find
distasteful about them, fucknut.
GURPS - Amazing line
of products. But In my opinion some areas that could use changing include the
following;
Hex grid makes
laying out battle scenes difficult
No it doesn’t.
Attributes are
overly simplified and crunched together making certain traits unbalanced in
power.
Meh.
Too much use of
percentages in calculations meant to balance things, but end up turning
character creation into a math assignment.
Wah.
Vehicle and Object
design are overly complicated by the same math assignment explanation above.
Wah. For GURPS players, those
things are often features, not bugs.
Uni-system - Too
simple in the sense the system does not feel complete but instead stitched
together. I have read through All Flesh Must be Eaten so I don't know if that
is different in any way for their other line of products under the system.
Well, at least you admit that your
bullshit opinion is based on ignorance here.
That’s nice of you.
Palladium Games -
This system has served the Megaverse well but it is severely showing it's age.
The detail of all the worlds are impressive and welcome, but they use the same
detail regarding system permutations which results in more of a choose your own
adventure then a flexible RPG system that leaves room for the imagination of
the Game Master.
I’m pretty sure you don’t have the
slightest idea what a flexible RPG system is, or much of an imagination.
d20 System - While
this system was available to everyone through the OGL and SRD, it doesn't feel
like it should be used for anything but Dungeons and Dragons. The level system
is great for telling people how powerful your character is, but to me loses the
essence of role-playing in the process.
See what I said about your
imagination above? You just confirmed it. Plus, you are apparently the kind of
douchebag who thinks they know what “the essence of role-playing” is. Also,
it’s not a universal system.
Storyteller
System(world of darkness) - The traits are elegant like a piece of art, but the
character creation is too simplistic. There is not enough variation between
starting characters making all the characters fairly generic.
Blah blah blah, more horseshit.
Also, not a universal system.
Fate - While in
theory this system is great and seems to blend the most interesting aspects of Fudge
RPG and the party game Fiasco, this system feels a little TOO abstract in my
opinion. Yes the flexibility is great allowing a person to produce a truely
unique character but during character creation the choice paralysis issue, and
the lack of providing large pool of solid examples for aspects caused issues
for our group.
If your group is like you, the
issue is that you’re fucking stupid.
What you have described here are
not problems with the games, they’re
problems with the people. Learn the difference.
“Milestones Versus XP Expenditures”
Is this a good
substitute for XP?
Nope. And kudos to the other posters. They covered
everything I would have said.
“Designing Mechanics For Simplicity and To Curtail Player
Misbehavior”
I've presented below
the most common problem behaviors among players and game-masters
No, you haven’t, and you know it,
you fucking impotent troll.
