Yes, I’ve fallen way behind on
this. Mostly because I’ve been working on other things. But I’m trying to get
back to it.
dose a gm need to have notes
dose a gm need to
have notes a person in my pathfinder gourp said you need to write down you
adventure
for any game or
players won't play it is this the case or do players mind if the gm is not
going by notes
. . . Uh. . . what? I think, near
as I can tell, the answer to this is Depends on the GM and the table, and smack
the player that told you whatever right in the junk.
I find it funny how most people think humans are the most boring
race in any tabletop game even though we are humans
I understand we find
humans boring to play because we are humans and we don't want to be something
that we already are but still I just find it kind of amusing.
Stop trying to inflate your post
count, newbie. And try to contribute more meaningfully next time.
Things that you think are Cool
Just things you
think are kinda neat, and like seeing in RPG's. (yes, it's a broad thread)
doesen't have to be big things.
Hrmmm. I like to bring in
xenomorphs, from the Aliens franchise. I’ve always liked those. Other than that,
I can’t think of anything that isn’t game-dependent.
Seeking pro-capitalism RPG
I am seeking an RPG
that is pro-capitalism and that honors the values of production and trade,
considering these to be the highest of moral values (rather than evil in _any_
regard).
. . . Got me. BTW, this turned into a stupidly boring thread.
Table top games and MMO'S.
Just curius as to
what my fellow posters would think would. make a good transition from tabletop
games to MMO's.For me personally. i think Rifts done right would make an
amazing MMO. Each, or most of the world books, could be a seperate stand alone
game. Throw in ideas from their sourcebooks and dimension books and youre
looking at some amazing games.PVP would be pretty straighfoward. CS against
"adventurer" groups. What are some of your choices?
I’m still waiting for a good
D&D MMO. Neverwinter is pretty shit. DDO is the closest, but it’s moving
ever farther away from D&D, and is saddled with a shit ton of bad fucking
decisions.
Despite my problems with Palladium
Books and KS, I would absolutely love to have a good Rifts ™ MMO. I’d also be
pretty interested in a real solid Shadowrun MMO, but I’d want both to stick
pretty close to the systems I know. None of this super house-ruled only in name
bullshit.
Handling Player Character death
How have you handled
the death of characters in game? do you roll up or create a new one? Do you
advance a NPC to level of player? Are there any pitfalls to look out for?
Depends on the game, really. In
Greyhawk , for example, there’s a fair chance they can find a way to bring you
back from the dead (though in my games, it’s not quite a simple as just casting
a spell; there are debts owed and the like). In by Buffy game, there was an
option to blow a shitload of your drama points to turn a death into a out for a
bit, come back later with something interesting going on. In other games, yeah,
you pretty much just roll up a new character, typically at the rough power
level of the surviving party.
RPGs explained with two cows
This was painfully stupid, though
it did provide the following line:
FATAL: You have two
cows. Did you roll for their anal circumference?
What RPGs would you buy with US $100 birthday money?
None, I’ve got fucking bills to
pay.
OBS / DriveThruRPG, "Tournament of Rapists" [update:
Publisher has removed book, new OBS policy in post #514]
Woo boy, was this a thread. I mean, there are 1, 032 posts in this
monster. Too much for me to say much about.
There's a stunt
called "Triggering," which gives you a bonus when attacking and
raping previous victims of sexual assault.
Should pornography
or sayf Mein Kampf be banned? No. Should they be available in Toys R Us? Not
remotely.
Holy shit! Look at that! Someone
being fucking reasonable! But luckily, Bunch
came along to stop that trend:
I lean more towards
free speech and voting with my wallet on a per item basis than attempting to
stamp out everything I object to and keeping anyone from seeing it.
That’s it, Bunch! Fuck that
strawman up!! I’m going to skip ahead some pages in this. Re-reading it would
take far more time than I’m willing to devote again. Yes, I read it all
the way through the first time. By the
700s, it’s almost down to Eric the .5b
and End Transmission trying to out
scumbag each other. Which is pretty typical for them, really.
At some point, Breitbart got in on
the action, on their own site, of course. And then, unsurprisingly, Doctor Futurity jumped in with another free speech strawman.
Because he’s a fuck nugget. Post 923 or
so.
Possibly the most intelligent thing said in the thread, by Steve “Conan” Trustrum, a pretty smart, decent guy
in general:
NEVER use Twitter to
try and have a discussion of any weight.
[Setting Design] "Standard" Fantasy
World.........Minus Humans
This is another thread started by
that whiny, trying sooooo very hard to be edgy and different twit, SilvercatMoonpaw.
I have a big hate-on
for humans. Or at least a large boredom. Please don't try to convince me to do
otherwise: either I'll ignore you, or we'll get into an argument and no one
wants that.
So what would you
get if you had a "standard" (i.e. influenced by D&D) fantasy
world but that has never had (and potentially never will) have humans?
Elves make pretty
homes in the trees, dwarves make imposing fortresses in the sides of mountains,
halflings maybe travel or else go hobbit and live in houses made to look like
hills within very pastoral rural communities. Orcs can either squat in the
badlands or build Warcraft-style spikey iron fortresses. The way I think of
things settlements would look a lot more integrated into or appropriate for the
landscapes than human versions.
What would be
missing if there weren't any humans? Vast cleared land for farms? Urban
landscapes that stand out from the surrounding terrain?
I'm looking for some
idea sparks because, frankly, I suck at
this.
No, silly. This isn’t what you suck
at. What you suck at is being all special and cool and shit. I could go to any
junior high in the nation, and I bet I could find 20% of the student population
that acts exactly like you do, in an attempt to be different and unique.
You’re a dumb ass, but I do hope
that someday, you’ll become comfortable with being you, instead of trying to be
this shitstain of a moron.
Explain (sell?) Apocalypse World ruleset to me
Not terribly interesting in and of
itself as a post. Mostly, it was a reply that got my attention, by DannyK:
Great fun for the
GM, too, because you never, ever have to roll anything.
Da fuq? How is never, ever having
to roll anything great fun for me as the GM? I like rolling shit. Taking all my rolls away is just a way to make
me hate the fucking game, sight unseen. Clearly, DannyK and I should never be at the
same table.
Mostly what I got from this thread
is that I now have no interest in any of the *World games, because apparently
it draws in the douchebags for players.
[Primarily GMs/DMs] What are some P&P RPG truisms that you
don't follow?
Huh. I don’t know. I can’t really
think of any such truisms off the top of my head. I guess maybe “don’t split
the party”? I have no problem splitting the party, and it happens fairly often.
Different characters have different tasks to accomplish sometimes. And yes,
that’s more a player truism, but note, it only says “primarily GMs” not only
GMs.
"Never kill
player characters"
Uh, I’ve never heard that touted as
a truism. I mean, I know some people don’t have character death at their
tables, or if they do, it’s only with PC coop, but a general truism? Nope,
sorry, bruh.
"Intra-party
conflict is forbidden"
That, on the other hand, I’ve heard
often enough that yeah, it probably counts, and hell yes I ignore it. As a GM,
it’s simply not up to me to determine if the PCs fight or even kill each other.
I’m there to adjudicate the rolls when they do!
From PerceptiveMan:
This thread is full
of people basically saying "I don't follow advice X because <reasons
that aren't actually implicit in X>". So most of the stuff here isn't
people not following truisms, it's people not understanding what the truisms
actually mean.
Nowhere is this more
clear than "Don't split the party"; Don't split the party isn't a GM
truism, it's a PLAYER truism for certain types of games where splitting the
party was generally lethal. GMs can split the party all they want.
If you read many of PrecetiveMan’s
posts, what you’ll learn is that they aren’t actually very perceptive. Or
smart.
The GM must follow
the rules. No, I do not. I do not have to let you roll to avoid falling into my
plot-mandated trap.
Well, no, you don’t have to follow
the rules. But thanks for letting us
know that you are a completely shit GM.
The GM is God/ It's
the GM's game/ The GM is the Final Authority in all things
Actually, this one is true. IF that’s what the table agrees on.
"always roll in
front of your players and never, ever fudge a roll for any reason"
Neither one of those are truisms.
Always roll in front of your players is actually pretty uncommon, and never
fudge a roll is a position held only by a minority of gamers who talk about these
things online.
Me? I don’t roll in front of the
players, but that’s because I’m from an old, small school that rolls dice
occasionally just to keep them guessing. And I roll behind The Wall of Fear and
Ignorance (the GM’s screen). Plus I’m usually a few feet away from them.
I don’t “fudge” (the cheater’s word
for cheating, because they’re too lily livered to just own their cheating)
rolls, because if I’m going to do that, why bother rolling the fucking dice?
Just make some shit up. And understand, as far as I’m concerned, just make some
shit up is a perfectly valid way to play the game, but everyone at the table
needs to know and agree that’s how it will be played.
As for truisms, It's
All About The Story.
Also not a truism. Man, a big chunk
of this thread is essentially people just whining about things they don’t like,
under the guise of a whole bunch of people doing those things and they’re wrong
wrong wrong!!!
Inaccuracies which break immersion
Usually, if I’m immersed, an
inaccuracy would have to be tremendous to break it. Otherwise, yes, there are
little things that can annoy me in media. One I blame on RPG.net when a poster
pointed out that there’s very often nothing in someone’s coffee or water cup,
and you can tell by the way they move it. Since then, I’ve noticed it Every.
Single. Fucking. Time.
It also mildly annoys me when
people are like “And their gun is 9mm, just like our shooter’s!” Well, sure
just like your shooter's, and an unfathomable number of other civilian-owned
handguns. I watched something the other night where a guy was wielding a .454
casull revolver. Now if he had shot someone, and the gun was found, “And his
gun is a .454 casull just like our shooter’s!” would have made perfect sense.
Luckily, I don’t really have any
in-depth knowledge to allow me to get pulled out or annoyed all that much! I
mean, shit. I live in OKC, watched Saving
Grace, and couldn’t tell you when they fucked things up.
When I see a Desert
Eagle in a movie, I tend to roll my eyes a bit.
No opinion, just wanted to say, I’ve
held a .50 AE Desert Eagle. Not shot it, just held it. Pretty sure if I tried
to discharge one, it would fly out of my hands. I couldn’t get my damn fingers
around it.
