Jeez, where
to start?
A couple
months ago, a lying shitbag (who, if you read his stuff, may legitimately be
mentally ill) decided he was going to harass the ever-loving shit out of his
ex-girlfriend. He tried in a couple of different places, but found no traction.
Then he found *chan, and a fertile ground for said harassment. At this place,
not only did he find people interested, but he found them willing and able to
more carefully craft the bullshit screed he would release defaming this young
lady, who (and this is an important factor) happened to be a video game
designer.
Time warp a
short bit, and this harassment had spread online a bit to the point where a
different (celebrity) scumfuck (hint: he played Jayne on Firefly) joined in and coined the term “GamerGate”. And wham bam
let’s harass some fucking women, #GamerGate was born.
If you know
what #GG is, then you’ve paid more attention than a lot of people. If not, it’s
an “anonymous” “movement” supposedly dedicated to “improving ethics in gaming
journalism”. In reality, it’s a pretty small number of people dedicated to
driving women and feminists out of the video game industry via continual
harassment and repeated threats of rape and death.
Now, the
followers and supporters of this movement will scream bloody fucking murder
that #GG is ALL about fixing the corruption in gaming journalism. And they keep
this battle cry up, without acknowledging the fact that none of their actual
targets are the games journalists or the big game developers.
No, their
targets have been, and continue to be women who design small indie games and
women who speak out about the sexism that is present in modern video gaming.
Now, if it’s really about ethics in gaming journalism, why do they continue to
go after these targets? Targets, who, by the way, have been driven from their
homes out of fear from the threats, and in one case, cancelled a speaking
engagement because of a murder threat that the FBI determined was not unusual
for the speaker to receive. Think about that. Not unusual. . .
They continue
to target these women and their supporters because the ethics line is a wispy
smokescreen at best, easily penetrated. Seriously; there are chat logs and
other evidence demonstrating that this was all
about harassment.
So why do
these people do this? I figure it’s one of three possibilities:
1. They have
only seen the surface claims of the movement and have seriously bought into the
whole “ethics in gaming journalism” line, and consciously or unconsciously
ignore the more vile stuff the movement is truly about. Sadly, this group
mostly refuses to accept the truth, because they don’t want to admit to
supporting a legitimate hate group.
2. They are
lying scumbags (and this covers the majority who post most often) who hate women,
and want to push them 100% out of the industry so they can continue to wallow
in their hatred and sexism. Imagine the He-Man Woman Haters Club except filled
with people who genuinely think women should shut the fuck up and do nothing
but service the men folk when they want it.
3. Trolls. A
small number of them are legitimate trolls who are simply using #GG as the
platform for this month’s trolling. Next month, they’ll use something else.
Now don’t go
thinking this is a new phenomenon. It is not. It’s just picked up a unifying
name finally. But this shit has been going on for a very long time (since the
dawn of humanity, really). The simple truth behind #GG is that some people are
shitty, shitty people who know nothing but hate. This raw truth is why #GG has
attracted terrible people to its side, including – no shitting you – actually Neo-Nazis and White Power folk. And the hardcore supporters (one of whom is a
staunch Holocaust denier by the way) welcome these people. Yes, they welcome
the addition of actual fucking Nazis.
Think about
that.
Think about
it even more considering this. Two of these white supremacist scumbags are
making $9,000 a month from #GG supporters on the promise of making videos that
defame one of the more prominent spokeswomen against sexism in video games. Their
monthly filming doesn’t start until they reach $15,000 a month. So they’re making $9,000 a month on the
promise of delivering hate speech. 405 scumbags are giving them this money,
because a woman dares to say “Hey, can we maybe treat women better in video
games?”
But it’s
actually about ethics in gaming journalism. . .
At least as
much the shit I took this morning. . .
So let’s
address their alleged true concern, ethics and corruption in gaming journalism:
Yeah, there
is probably some corruption and bribery going on there. No argument. So the big
question is what can we legitimately do about it without being hate-filled
scumbags who only bother to harass women?
I don’t know.
I don’t care. Why? Because it’s fucking VIDEO GAME JOURNALISM. It shouldn’t
even have the word “journalism” in it, because it’s about reviews for video
games. Do you know how important that is? Not. It’s not fucking important. My
dog scratching his ass is literally more important than this bullshit. Boo
fucking woo some game got a 9 instead of a 10. Get some god damned perspective
you ignorant shitfucks.
Speaking of
perspective, did you know (according to #GGers) that “gamers” are the most
oppressed group of the last 50 years. And that #GG is like that guy facing down
the tanks in Tiananmen Square back in 89? This is the kind of BS #GGers are
putting out there. They are so very amazingly desperate to try and portray
themselves as oppressed victims fighting some Lord of the Rings epic battle
against Sauron the Social Justice Feminist Warrior. They are scrambling around
trying to co-opt the language of genuinely oppressed peoples.
It’s
ridiculous and pathetic, much like the followers and supporters of #GG.
So this whole
“movement” is nothing but a hate group. If you support it, I want you to step
away from the computer and console for a little while and ponder the fact that
you might be a hateful scumbag.
Also, and
this is a personal issue with the whole thing. You’re not gamers. You play video games of all stripes. That’s not gaming! If you’re not
throwing dice to see if you hit or if the fireball turns you into charred
leftovers, YOU ARE NOT GAMING!!
So I’m going
to try and introduce a new hashtag:
#REALGAMERSTHROWDICE
I’m taking
our word back.
Now go stop
being Nazi-loving scum and direct that energy to important shit.
